BALTIMORE -- Baltimore city police continued to investigate Friday after Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Michael Phelps was involved in a car crash Thursday night. Officers said Phelps was driving a black Cadillac Escalade that collided with a Honda Accord at the intersection of East Biddle and North Calvert streets just before 9 p.m. Police said that the other driver was at fault in the accident The woman driving the Accord was taken to a hospital as a precaution, but police said her injuries did not appear to be serious. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says the female driver ran a red light in her Honda Accord sedan and crashed in an intersection with Phelps' SUV. It was not immediately clear if police had issued a citation to the woman. Phelps was not injured. He spoke with investigators at the scene and was allowed to go home. His SUV had a crumpled hood and was on a tow truck. The gray Accord had considerable damage on the front driver side. Police said Phelps was sober at the scene, was not given a breathalyzer and that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Two passengers with him were not hurt. "We knew it was Michael Phelps, and we knew that it's going to get a lot of public scrutinty in the media, national (media) is going to be interested, so we had our best people on it," said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. One Mount Vernon resident told 11 News that accidents are common in that area. "I'd like to see something done about it, maybe more (police) enforcement, do something about the speed limit here, or even a delayed yellow on one of the lights," said Brendan Costigan. John Cadigan, a senior coach with the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, which is based at the swim center operated by Phelps and his coach, said he hadn't talked to Phelps about the crash Friday and didn't know anything more than what was in the media. Cadigan said Phelps is not scheduled to be back in practice there until next week, but didn't say whether he would be at the club on Friday. Phelps won eight gold medals in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Most recently, Phelps earned five golds and a silver over eight days at the world swimming championships in Rome.
